When choosing a surgeon to perform facial plastic surgery, it is very important to choose a surgeon who is board certified. Some surgeons dabble in cosmetic surgery while others perform cosmetic surgery mostly on the body. Facial Plastic Surgeons perform plastic surgery only on a patient's face, while General Plastic Surgeons perform entire body plastic surgery and may not specialize in any one particular area. Some physicians aren't even surgeons, but they perform cosmetic surgery. When a doctor is board certified in Facial Plastic Surgery, that means that he has undergone extensive training and passed both a written and oral test as well as submitted an extensive list of cosmetic surgeries on the face that they have performed. This is far different than a doctor who goes away for a weekend course, and comes home to start performing procedures. Why this is allowed in this country is a discussion for another day, but these are the facts. Board certified facial plastic surgeons not only have the expertise to perform these procedures, but also the knowledge of the postoperative period to ensure the best outcomes. So how can a patient be sure the doctor performing their procedure is board certified? Patients should ask their physician a lot of questions. They should specifically ask if he or she is board certified in facial plastic and reconstructive surgery by the American Board of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery. They should also request to see before and after photos of patients the doctor has operated on to see what kind of results they can expect.
