Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) has recently been recognized in several studies as an effective promoter of hair growth. What is PRP for hair loss?
PRP for hair growth works by stimulating the growth of follicles. PRP is not well understood, but it has been shown to apparently reverse hair miniaturization seen in androgenetic alopecia or pattern baldness. The popular theory is that PRP works by stimulating the stem cells of the newly transplanted hair follicles or other existing stem cells.
PRP systems separate red blood cells, white blood cells, platelets, and other blood components and allow for a higher concentrated product of platelets. Dr. Ende’s PRP hair growth system and PRP kits obtain PRP from your own blood which is then spun in a centrifuge to separate it. Platelet activators, such as thrombin, calcium chloride, and collagen may be added. Currently available PRP systems include Cydomedix, Emcyte Pure PRP, the Angel system, and the Harvest system. Dr. Ende uses the Harvest PRP system exclusively for hair regrowth.
PRP is relatively painless and involves a short numbing process followed by a 5 minute injection sequence of the PRP into the scalp. PRP results in a reversing of hair miniaturization within 2-6 months and hair regrowth/increased hair counts of approximately 16 percent during the first 2 hair cycles or within 6 months.
